    What is PAT Testing?

Pat Testing consist of various tests conducted under controlled passing of volts in to appliances to ascertain and gain readings on Earth bond continuity and insulation levels. This paired with an initial Visual inspections plus optional Flash testing and load test will give the engineer the ability to advise that an appliance is safe to operate or if actions are required.

    Class 2 Appliance (no Earth)

The test that needs to be carried out here is simply an insulation test. Under the same controlled test where volts are transferred into the appliance and readings are taking to measure protection form insulation. Theses appliances are most commonly IT equipment, lamps and fans Etc. On sensitive class 2 equipment lower Voltage is transferred to the appliance to ensure the safety of the appliance. Generally lowered form 500volts to 250volts.

    Visual inspection

This is where 70% of all faults are determined, damaged plugs, nicks in wire, bare wire core, scald marks, broken switched and casing. These are the main signs that an engineer is looking for. Once an appliance has been visually inspected it can be readied for electrical testing only is suitable (passed visual)

    Class 1 Appliance (earth present)

There are 2 test which need to be carried out here, Earth Bond Continuity and Insulation. Earth Bond will ascertain whether the Earth connection from plug to appliance still has its full integrity. Insulation test will run Specific volts into appliance measuring whether the insulation provide is suitable.

    Visual Inspection Only

In some circumstances it is necessary to carry out a visual inspection. This would be advised by the engineer and discussed with the customer. Examples of this would be server equipment in offices.
